10/30/2023 0 Comments Green zebra tomato plant![]() As a grower, you should make the decision to pull your tomato plants if they stop producing at a healthy rate, are diseased, or if space is needed for more seasonal vegetables. In Zones 9 and 10, you can grow tomatoes year round but their productivity will greatly dimension once temperatures cool and the days are shorter. It happens when a typically annual plant grows year round in mild weather. Often times you can grow tomatoes year round. Tomatoes grow well in the extended warm season of Zones 9 and 10.Green Zebra fruits begin to turn an orange/yellow color when ripe, making this a fun tomato for kids to observe from start to finish. These tasty Green Zebra tomatoes are perfect for snacking, salads, or for making salsa verde. This makes for a long season of harvesting. Green Zebra fruits of about 1-2″ are grown in clusters, each ripening at different periods. Tomato cages tend to not be strong enough or large enough to hold indeterminate tomatoes sufficiently. On our farm, we like to use heavy gauge t-posts and tomato wire. ![]() Be sure to put up some kind of trellising system when you plant. In mild climates like that of Southern California, vines can reach 20 feet or more. Vines can be very vigorous, reaching 7″ feet or more in areas with frost. We all love our tried-and-true tomato varieties, but there’s something fun about branching out into something new and exciting. It’s named for Brad Gates who develops tomato varieties in California. The result is a one-of-a-kind, prizewinning tomato variety that is surprisingly tasty, too. It’s hard to find words to describe the brilliance of this tomato, but each individual fruit varies in its coloring-oranges, greens, reds, blues, browns, purples-and pattern of striping. If you thought Pink Berkeley was wild looking, here is her even crazier cousin, Brad’s Atomic Grape. It’s a lovely, elongated tomato with orange stripes and is well worth adding to your garden. Striped Roman is a roma tomato, a good producer, and excellent for making sauces. And if you can get all that in a striped tomato, it’s even better. Sometimes you just want a solid, workhorse tomato that’s productive and meaty. (Additional bonus: the tomatoes are quite large and yet mature nicely within our northern growing season.) ![]() If you imagine Green Zebra as sedate and reliable, you can imagine Pink Berkeley as a gregarious overachiever. Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye is gorgeous and productive with a tie-dyed appearance (seed catalogs often describe the interior color of the tomato as “kaleidoscopic”) that’s truly a delight. Maybe the stripes aren’t as pronounced on Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye as they are on Green Zebra, but I promise you this: You won’t even care. Purple Zebra is a hybrid with high disease resistance-it was an All-America Selections winner (national) in 2022. You can also check out the related Red Zebra and the newer Purple Zebra varieties. It’s not technically an heirloom variety due to its youthfulness, but it’s open pollinated and is definitely an heirloom tomato in spirit. Green Zebra is green when ripe and sports darker green stripes. It’s earned this place by longevity-the variety turns 40 years old this year-and by its well-deserved fame as a well-known striped variety. I don’t think I could start any article on striped tomatoes without placing Green Zebra at the top of the list.
